Episode 13: Part-Time Filipino, Full-Time Clout Chaser

Wow! After a few months hiatus, we are back with a new episode of Cracking the Coconut! In our 13th episode, we share our personal experiences (and our first time on a float!) at the 29th Pistahan Festival in San Francisco. We also dive into the importance of Filipino representation, not only in the Filipino community but our cities, country and the world. While being able to share the special day with fellow Filipinos and extended community, many people still see Filipino-Americans as “clout-chasers” who only claim their “Filipino-ness” when it is convenient or when they can benefit from it. Truth is, learning and educating ourselves about our Filipino backgrounds, identity and culture is a process that is unique to each individual. The more open we are to each other and their own journey, leads to more acceptance and belonging.
